What is cryptocurrency?

A cryptocurrency is digital money that lives on a network of computers instead of in a bank. No single company or government controls it. Instead, every computer on the network holds a shared copy of the ledger, the master record of who sent what to whom. When someone sends coins, the network agrees the transfer is valid, writes it into the ledger, and the balance moves. That agreement process is called consensus, and it is what makes crypto work without a middleman.
